IFS Steering Box

(Power flow)

Trail-Gear’s new Power Flow IFS Steering Box has been designed and engineered to provide ultimate performance making it the perfect choice for those with solid axle vehicles who want to install high-steer. This is not a 30-year-old rebuilt steering box, but a completely new unit. While designed to be a direct replacement for the 86-88 box, this steering box will also work in the 89-95 application by adjusting the steering input shaft. We specifically chose to base our design on the 86-88 model for its ease of service. Each box comes pre-drilled and tapped making it ideal for high-steer applications with or without ram assist. If you are not using ram assist, just leave in the pre-installed plugs. When transitioning to ram assist, the removable plugs not only eliminate the need to remove the box from the truck to drill and tap but also eliminate any chance of contaminating the system with metal shavings.

NOTE: On 1989-1995 applications you will need to adjust the Steering Input Shaft in order to use this Steering Box. If using in ram assist applications you will need to purchase (2) of our 1/4″ pipe to #6 JIC fittings to connect the ram assist hoses, see Part # : 2051595.

Before Bleeding - Check and Correct as Needed:

  • Inspect steering system
  • Hoses must not touch any other part of the vehicle
  • Steering system noise could be caused by hose touching frame, body or engine
  • All hose connections must be tight
  • Loose connections might not leak but could allow air into the system

How To Bleed:

    1. Switch ignition off.

    2. Raise front wheels off the ground and secure vehicle with jack stands.

    3. Turn steering wheel full left.

    4. Fill fluid reservoir to "FULL COLD" level, leave cap off.

    5. Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock at least 20 times. On systems with long lines or ram assist cycle steering at least 40 times.

    6. Trapped air may cause fluid to overflow - keep fluid level at "FULL COLD".

    7. Start engine and maintain fluid level at "FULL COLD".

    8. Reinstall Fluid Cap.

    9. Keep Engine Running for 2 minutes.

    10. Return wheels to center and lower wheels to ground.

    11. Turn wheel with engine running.

Verify the Following:

  • Smooth power assist
  • Noiseless operation
  • Proper fluid level
  • No system leaks
  • Proper fluid condition (no bubbles, foam or discoloration)

    Great design

Trail Gears the manufacturer but I must say this is a great design overall and I'm more than happy that I spent the extra money for a new and not used/remanufactured part for my 1987 4Runner. I will update this if I run into any issues. Install was easy too. Honestly a 45 min job
