The 3VZ-E is the 3.0-litre V6 Toyota fitted from 1988 to 1995 — the Pickup, the second-generation 4Runner and the early T100. Most people write it 3VZE, and that is what we call it here too. It is the engine the 5VZ-FE replaced, and LC Engineering still stocks it properly: cylinder heads, headers, rebuild parts and the fuel and ignition components these trucks need after thirty-odd years.

You will see it written 3VZ, 3VZE and 3VZ-E, and some people simply say the 3.0. All the same engine. Note that it is 3VZ-E, not 3VZ-FE — the FE suffix belongs to a different engine family and does not apply here.
Being straight about this engine's reputation: the 3VZE has a well-known head gasket history, and that is what brings most people to this page. It is a fixable problem, not a reason to give up on the truck, and doing it properly the first time is the whole game.
Cylinder Heads — the Main Event
If the gaskets have gone, the heads are almost always worth addressing at the same time. We offer them several ways:
The 3VZ head gasket set covers the gaskets alone, and the Pro head stud set is the upgrade we would recommend to anyone doing this job once and not wanting to do it again. Factory head bolts are torque-to-yield; studs clamp more evenly and can be re-torqued.
The 3VZE is a timing belt engine, not a chain engine like the 22R family, and the belt is a scheduled replacement item that a great many of these trucks are overdue for. The timing belt kit for 1988-1992 covers it.
Getting the marks right is the part that catches people out, and it is the single most-read 3VZ article we publish: 3VZ timing. Read it before you take the covers off, not after.
Most 3VZE running complaints trace back to a small number of aged components rather than anything serious.
The 3VZE throttle body is a common one, and the throttle position sensor with it — the OEM TPS for 1989-1995 fits the 22R-E and the 3VZE both. A misadjusted TPS produces symptoms people chase for months.
The 3VZ silicone vacuum hose kit replaces the factory lines, which by now are brittle and a genuine source of running faults — and it is one of the cheapest jobs on this list.
It is a fair question and we get asked it weekly. The 5VZ-FE 3.4L that replaced this engine is more powerful, more reliable and better supported.
But a 3VZE that has had its heads done properly, with studs, a fresh timing belt and sorted vacuum lines, is a perfectly good engine that will keep a 4Runner going for years — and it stays in the truck it was designed for, with no wiring, mounts or exhaust to solve. If the truck is otherwise sound and you like it, fix the 3VZE. If you are already deep into the engine bay for other reasons, the swap starts to make sense.
