Which Trucks Came With the 3RZ

The 3RZ-FE was the 2.7 four-cylinder across four platforms:

Vehicle Years with the 3RZ-FE Notes
Toyota Tacoma (1st gen) 1995–2004 The volume application. The 2.4-litre trucks got the 2RZ-FE instead.
Toyota 4Runner (3rd gen) 1996–2000 Base four-cylinder. The V6 trim ran the 5VZ-FE.
Toyota T100 1995–1998 Base engine for the T100's final years.
Toyota Tundra (1st gen) 2000–2004 Base four-cylinder.

People write it 3RZ, 3RZFE, 3RZ-FE or 3RZ FE, and plenty simply call it the 2.7. They are all the same engine. The one split that does matter is the intake: 1995–1999 heads have eight intake ports and 2000–2004 heads have four. Forced induction kits and cylinder heads are not interchangeable across that line, so check the year before you order.

Boost It — Supercharger and Turbo

This is what the 3RZ is known for, and it is the largest part of what we sell for it. Supercharger kits split by year and by how much boost the engine can live with:

On the turbo side, the Pro Turbo Kit low boost and the Pro Turbo Kit high boost are complete kits built around our own CNC turbo manifold. If you are turbocharging, the 2RZ/3RZ turbo valve train kit is not optional in our view — the factory valve springs are the first thing to give up under boost.

Honest advice on which to pick: a supercharger makes its power low and early, which is what a truck actually uses. A turbo makes more of it but higher up, and it is a bigger install. For a daily-driven Tacoma the low-boost blower is usually the better truck. Either way, refresh the bottom end first if the engine has real miles on it.

Replace It — Long Blocks and Crate Engines

If the engine is tired or apart, the Stage 1 Series Long Block for 1995-2004 is a complete, ready-to-install engine built here rather than sourced and resold. People search for these as crate engines and that is a fair description of what arrives.

Building your own instead? Start with the Master Rebuild Kit 3RZ 1995-2004, add street pistons with rings, and if the crank is beyond regrinding we stock a new OEM Toyota 3RZ crankshaft.

The Balance Shaft Question

The 3RZ carries a pair of balance shafts that smooth the engine out and cost you a small amount of power and oil pressure to drive. They are also a known failure point on high-mileage engines, and when a balance shaft bearing goes it takes oil pressure with it.

Our balance shaft removal kit deletes them properly, with the correct plugs and hardware rather than a workaround. If you are keeping them, the balance shaft bearings are available separately.

Worth being clear about the trade: deleting them frees a little power and removes a failure mode, but the engine will be noticeably busier at idle and on the motorway. On a built or boosted truck that is a fair swap. On a stock daily driver, most people would rather keep the smoothness.

Build It — Heads, Cams and Valvetrain

Cylinder heads are split by port count, matching the year:

Camshafts run in stages: Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 5. Pick lower than you think. A Stage 1 or 2 in a truck that also has exhaust and intake sorted will feel better everywhere than a Stage 3 that only wakes up above 4,500 rpm. Back any cam choice with the High Performance Pro Valve Train Kit.

Breathe — Intake and Exhaust

The LCE Street Header Kit for the 1995-2004 Tacoma is 50-state legal up to 1999 and fits single-cat trucks only — check which you have before ordering. On the intake side the Rock Ripper Extreme air intake comes in two versions to match the head: 1995-2000 and 2001-2004.

If you would rather buy the combination than assemble it, the High-Performance Bolt-On Power Kit for the 3RZ Tacoma bundles the parts that work together.

Maintain It

The timing chain is the job worth doing before it does itself. We offer it two ways: the basic street timing chain kit and the standard kit with more of the wear parts included. If the front of the engine is already apart, do the standard one.

Also here: the water pump, the 1995-1997 distributor, fuel injector cups with O-rings — a common leak point that people chase for months — and the oil pump cover and rotor kit.

Swapping a 3RZ Into an Older Truck

Putting a 3RZ into a 22R-era Pickup or 4Runner is one of the better swaps available, and we make the parts that make it survivable. The LCE engine swap header solves the exhaust side, the MIG-welded conversion motor mounts solve the mounting, and the high-capacity oil pan clears a solid axle if the truck has one — a clash people discover late. For a 3RZ going into a Tacoma with a solid axle conversion there is also the T100 oil pan kit.

Engine management is the part to plan for rather than improvise. A 3RZ needs its own ECU and harness in an older chassis, and adapting the factory 22R-E wiring is not a road worth going down. Talk to us before you start — we have seen most versions of this swap and can tell you what it really takes.

Which Truck Is It In?

If you would rather shop by vehicle than by engine: 1st gen Tacoma (1995-2004), 3rd gen 4Runner (1996-2002), T100, 1st gen Tundra.

Related engines: the 2RZ-FE 2.4L shares most of this catalogue, the 2TR-FE replaced it in 2005, and the 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 was the engine above it in the same trucks.

Not sure which parts suit your build? Tell us the year, the truck and what you want it to do. We would rather sell you the right part once than the wrong part twice. If you would prefer we built the whole thing, let us do your build.
