Both engines arrived in 1995 and left in 2004. The 2RZ-FE is 2.4 litres, the 3RZ-FE is 2.7. In a first-generation Tacoma the 2.4 was the lighter, cheaper, mostly-2WD option and the 2.7 was everything else.
For parts, the two share far more than they differ. Cylinder heads, camshafts, valve train, distributors, timing components, water pumps and most gaskets carry both part numbers. What differs is anything tied to displacement — pistons, rebuild kits, the long block itself — and the supercharger kits, which are calibrated per engine.
The split that catches people out is not 2RZ versus 3RZ at all. It is the year: 1995–1999 heads have eight intake ports, 2000–2004 heads have four. Forced induction and cylinder head parts do not cross that line. Check the year first, the displacement second.
People write it 2RZ, 2RZFE, 2RZ-FE or 2RZ FE, and many just call it the 2.4. Same engine throughout.
The 2.4 responds well to boost, and because it starts with less displacement it feels the difference more than the 2.7 does.
Turbo kits come in two boost levels: the Pro Turbo Kit low boost and the Pro Turbo Kit high boost, both built around our 2RZ/3RZ CNC turbo manifold. Add the turbo valve train kit — the factory springs are the weak link under boost, and they are cheap to address while the head is off.
One honest note. On a 2.4 the high-boost kits ask a lot of a stock bottom end. If the truck has covered serious miles, spend the money on the engine before you spend it on the blower.
The Stage 1 Series Long Block for 1995-2004 is a complete engine, machined and assembled here, ready to install. If you are rebuilding the one you have, the Master Rebuild Kit 2RZ 1995-2004 is the foundation, with the head gasket set available on its own if that is all the job needs.
The Stage 1 cylinder head for 1996-2000, 8 intake ports and the 2001-2004 four-port version cover both eras.
Camshaft sets run Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 5. On a 2.4 in particular, go conservative — a big cam on a small engine trades away exactly the low-end torque a truck needs. Support any cam with the High Performance Pro Valve Train Kit.
The LCE Street Header Kit for 1995-2004 is 50-state legal up to 1999. On the intake side, the 2.4L Rock Ripper Extreme air intake for 2001-2004, and for boosted builds the lower supercharger manifold.
Timing chain first. The 2RZ street timing chain kit covers the job properly, or the chain on its own if the guides and tensioner are already sorted.
The rest of what wears: the water pump, the 1995-1997 distributor, the 1995-1999 valve cover with baffle, the OE harmonic balancer, and fuel injector cups with O-rings, which are a quiet source of fuel smell and rough running that people chase for a long time before finding.
The 2RZ goes into a 22R-era Pickup or 4Runner on the same parts as the 3RZ: the LCE engine swap header, MIG-welded conversion motor mounts, and the high-capacity oil pan where a solid axle is in the way. Engine management needs a standalone ECU and harness — ask us before you start rather than after.
If you are choosing which to swap in and both are available to you, take the 3RZ. The parts cost is the same and you get the extra 300cc for nothing.
The 2RZ-FE was fitted to the first-generation Tacoma (1995-2004).
Related engines: the 3RZ-FE 2.7L is the larger version of this engine and shares most of these parts, the 2TR-FE replaced both in 2005, and the 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 was the engine above them in the same trucks.
Not sure what fits? Tell us the year and what you are building. We would rather sell you the right part once than the wrong part twice. If you would prefer we built the engine for you, let us do your build.
