Start With Pressure, Not Parts
Most 3RZ running complaints that get blamed on injectors are fuel pressure problems, and pressure is the one thing you can measure rather than guess at.
The fuel pressure gauge kit answers the question directly: is the regulator doing its job, and is the rail seeing the pressure it should? It comes with everything needed to fit it.
One install note from us: use fuel-safe Teflon tape or Permatex PermaShield on the threads. Ordinary thread sealant is not adequate here, and a weeping fuel fitting is not a small problem.
The Regulator
The OEM fuel pressure regulator is a genuine Toyota part — we are an authorised partner — for 1995-2004 4Runner, Tacoma and T100.
It maintains rail pressure, and when it fails the symptoms are hard starting, poor running and bad economy rather than anything dramatic. On a thirty-year-old truck it is a reasonable thing to replace on suspicion once you have measured the pressure and found it wrong.
Injector Cups — Different on This Engine
This is worth knowing, because it catches out people who have worked on older Toyota fours.
On the 2RZ and 3RZ the fuel injector cups sit directly in the cylinder head casting, not in the manifold as on previous engine generations. They give the OEM injector a clean, sealed seat — and after years of under-hood heat cycling they harden and stop sealing.
The fuel injector cup and O-ring set is the fix, and it is cheap insurance any time the head is off or the fuel system is apart. Reusing worn cups is how you end up with a vacuum leak you cannot find.
Injector seals
The injector O-ring, grommet and isolator kit covers four injectors and should be replaced whenever the engine or manifold assembly is serviced.
Two things to watch. It will not work on 3VZ or 5VZ engines — those V6s use a different injector. And the cap end is sold separately in two styles depending on your year, so check which you need rather than assuming.
Connectors and Filters
The injector connector solves a problem every one of these trucks eventually has: the plastic locking tab snaps, the connector will not stay on, and someone reaches for the RTV. This one uses a different locking arrangement and is designed not to break the same way.
The fuel filter is the most overlooked tune-up part on this engine. Consider what it is filtering — a twenty-five to thirty year old steel tank with debris in it, and modern fuel. If you cannot remember changing it, change it.
Standalone Engine Management
If you are fitting the LC Pro Fuel Injection System, the hall sensor mount locates the Hall effect sensor correctly to take a signal off the crank pulley. It is a small bracket that makes an otherwise awkward part of the install straightforward.
Standalone management is the right answer once you are past what the factory ECU can adapt to — a high boost supercharger, a turbo kit or a Stage 3 and above camshaft. Below that, the factory computer copes better than people expect, and a Stage 1 camshaft is specifically designed to run on it.
Diagnosing in the Right Order
- Measure fuel pressure. Everything else is guesswork until you have.
- Change the filter if its age is unknown.
- Check for vacuum leaks — throttle body gasket and injector cups are the usual culprits. See Intake & Throttle Body.
- Check the TPS adjustment before replacing sensors.
- Then look at injectors.
