Where We Are Strong on the 40 Series

We want to be straight about what this page is. LC Engineering is a Toyota truck company first — our depth is in the 20R, 22R, 3RZ and 5VZ engine families and the Pickup, 4Runner and Tacoma chassis around them. On the 40 Series our catalog is narrow and specific rather than comprehensive. What we do carry, we carry because it is the part that actually breaks.

Front Axle: Birfields and CV Sets

The knuckle joints are the 40 Series weak point, and they get worse with every inch of tire. A stock birfield on 35s and a locker is living on borrowed time.

The Longfield FJ40 30-spline 4340 chromoly super set is the established fix — stronger material and a 30-spline count that moves the failure point away from the joint. If you would rather eliminate the birfield entirely, the RCV Ultimate 30-spline CV front axle set for 40/55 Series (1976-1984) replaces it with a true CV joint, and the same set with 300M shafts upgrades the inner shafts to match. Note the 1976–1984 fitment window on both — earlier drum-knuckle axles are a different part.

Bushings

Sixty-year-old rubber is usually the cheapest ride-quality fix available on one of these trucks. We carry the FJ40 and FJ60 master bushing set for 1964-1978 and the 1979-1989 leaf spring bushing set. Note the split at 1979 — the two sets are not interchangeable.
