As with the 40 Series, the birfield is what gives out on a 60 Series once tire size and traction go up. The Longfield FJ60 30-spline 4340 chromoly super set birfield kit is the part we sell for this, and it is the same proven approach: better material, higher spline count, failure moved away from the joint.
Do this before a locker rather than after. A rear locker alone will find a marginal front birfield the first time you use it in earnest.
3F and 3F-E Engine Work
The 60 Series ran the 2F through 1987 and the fuel-injected 3F-E from 1988. For the later engine we stock the complete engine gasket set for the 4.0L 3F-E, 1988-1992 — the full set rather than a head gasket on its own, which is what you want if the engine is coming apart at all.
Note the year split: 1981–1987 FJ60 trucks run the carbureted 2F and need different gaskets. Check what is actually in the truck, since engine swaps across this generation are common.
For adding instrumentation, our gauge pods and pillars give you somewhere to put oil pressure and temperature gauges, which is worth doing on a thirty-five-year-old engine you intend to work.
