LC Pro or Rock Ripper? Where the Truck Lives Decides It

We build two intake systems for the fuel-injected 22RE and they are aimed at different trucks. Both are street and emissions legal in all 50 states, so this is not a compliance decision — it is a use-case one.

LC Pro Air Intake Kit — the value choice for a street truck

This is our stainless crossover tube and the K&N open-element approach combined into one kit, which is what made it more affordable than buying the parts separately. It throws away the restrictive factory filter box, the plastic intake tube and the rubber elbows, and replaces them with a powder-coated intake tube, silicone hose connections, an open element K&N filter and our own fabricated air meter bracket.

By year: 1985-1987, 1988, 1989-1995.

Rock Ripper Extreme Air Intake — the choice for dust

One-piece polished stainless tubing and a high-performance filter charger with twice the filter surface area and twice the filtering quality. That is the whole argument for it: in an off-road environment, filter area is what keeps performance from falling off as the element loads up with dust. Quicker throttle response, clamps and brackets included, washable and reusable element, and up to 5 HP.

By year: 1985-1987 Pickup and 4Runner, 1988, 1989-1995.

One warning that matters: the 50-state smog certificate covers the kit as supplied. Substituting any part for something else voids it. If emissions compliance is why you are buying this, fit it exactly as it comes.

K&N FIPK

The K&N 57 Series FIPK for the 1984-1995 Pickup and 4Runner is the off-the-shelf alternative if you would rather run the K&N system as K&N designed it.

Breathers and PCV

On an engine this age the crankcase ventilation system is usually the cheapest running problem to fix and the most often ignored. A blocked PCV valve shows up as oil leaks that no gasket will cure.

PCV parts: the PCV valve, the OE steel valve, the grommet and the relocation kit. PCV hoses for the 22R, the 22RE, and the 22RE OE replacement.

K&N breathers if you would rather vent than recirculate: the breather that eliminates the PCV, the 1988-1995 resonator-mount breather and the front valve cover breather with adapter.

Breather hoses — check the year carefully

The front-of-valve-cover breather hose changed three times: 22R 1985-1990, 22RE 8/1984-7/1988 and 22RE 8/1988-1995. There is also an OE replacement breather hose and an OE front valve cover breather hose for the 22RE.

Vacuum Hoses

Thirty-year-old vacuum lines crack where you cannot see them, and on a 22RE that means a lean idle, a hunting idle, or a check engine light that never quite makes sense. Replacing the lot at once is far quicker than chasing them one at a time. Silicone kits in your choice of four colours, or fixed in black and blue.

Carbureted Engines

If you are running a Weber or the factory Aisin, the air cleaner mounts differently. The Weber stock replacement air filter and the adapter to run the stock filter on a Weber keep the original look. To go the other way, the Aisin to K&N filter adapter kit and the Aisin carb to K&N adapter and filter kit.
