One Built Long Block, and We Will Say So

If you know our 22R range you will expect a ladder of stages. There is one built long block for the 2RZ — the Stage 1 Series — and we would rather tell you that than imply a catalogue we do not have.

So there are three honest routes:

2.4 or 2.7? The Honest Comparison

The 2RZ and the 3RZ are the same engine family, same architecture, largely the same parts. The 3RZ is 2.7 litres and the 2RZ is 2.4.

People ask us regularly whether they should build the 2.4 or find a 2.7. The straight answer: if you are buying a built long block anyway, the 2.7 gives you more torque for very similar money. The 2.4 makes sense when it is the engine already in your truck, when you want to keep the vehicle numbers-matching, or when a class rule caps displacement.

Where the 2.4 genuinely wins is rev character. The shorter stroke makes it happier to rev, which suits a lighter truck with a cammed, naturally aspirated build.

The Bolt-On Package

If the engine is healthy, the High-Performance Package addresses the factory restrictions on both sides of the engine — intake, exhaust and shift — without opening it up. It is the sensible first spend on a running truck, and because it improves how the engine breathes it does not normally cost you fuel economy.

Building It Yourself

Everything in our long blocks is sold separately. Start with the Master Rebuild Kit, then:

Pistons, Rods & Crankshafts · Cylinder Heads & Valvetrain · Camshafts · Timing Components

One advantage the 2RZ has over its bigger brother: it has no counterbalance shafts. The 3RZ's one known bottom end weakness is simply not present here, and there is nothing to delete during your build.

Then What?

  • Supercharger — belt driven, torque from idle, CARB-legal options for the right years.
  • Turbo Kits & Parts — more top end, more tuning, more heat to manage.

Deciding between rebuilding, replacing or swapping to a 2.7? Tell us the truck and what it does and we will give you a straight answer.
