Worth saying plainly: we do not build a turbo kit for the 5VZ. On this engine, forced induction means a supercharger, and the Magnuson 3.4L system is the proven route.
That is not a gap in the range so much as the right answer for the engine and the trucks it lives in. A supercharger is belt driven from the crankshaft, so boost arrives with engine speed rather than exhaust flow — no spool, no lag, and more torque from idle to redline.
For a 4Runner, Tacoma or Tundra that tows, climbs or runs larger tyres, that low-speed torque is the thing you actually feel. It also avoids putting a red-hot turbine into a V6 engine bay that has very little spare room in it.
The Magnuson 3.4L supercharger system covers 1995-2004 5VZ-FE. It is the same family of blower used behind the TRD kits these trucks were offered with when new, which means the supporting parts are well understood and widely available — a real advantage twenty-odd years on.
The bypass valve is what lets the engine breathe normally when you are off boost. It is a wear item, and it is the part most likely to need replacing on a truck that already has a blower fitted.
There are two, and they are not interchangeable. Look at your charger body:
Ordering by engine alone will get you the wrong part half the time. Check the colour before you buy.
The 4-rib supercharger drive belt is a sensible spare to carry. A belt failure on a supercharged engine is not catastrophic, but it does turn a boosted truck into a slow one a long way from home.
Start with a healthy engine. Boost finds every weakness a tired engine has. If yours is high mileage or using oil, a rebuild or a fresh long block first will cost less than a supercharger fitted to a worn bottom end.
