First: Turbo Block or Non-Turbo Block?

This is the question that catches people, and it has nothing to do with the year of the truck.

Toyota built a factory-turbocharged version of the 22R — the 22R-TE — and its block is not the same as the naturally aspirated 22R/22R-E block. Oil feed and return provisions differ, and so do the pistons. Our kits come in two families and they are not interchangeable.

  • Non-turbo block — for a standard 22R or 22R-E you are adding boost to.
  • Turbo block — for an engine that came turbocharged from the factory, or a build using that block.

Second: Low Boost or High Boost?

Low boost is the sensible choice on a healthy stock-internals engine. High boost asks for supporting work — fuelling, ignition, and honestly an engine you have built rather than one with 200,000 miles on it. The kit will make the power either way; the question is what the bottom end does about it.

Upgrading a Factory CT20

If the truck already has the factory turbo and you want more out of it without changing the manifold:

A modern ball-bearing Garrett in place of a thirty-year-old CT20 is one of the better value changes available on these trucks.

Turbo or Supercharger?

Both are on the shelf and they suit different owners. A supercharger gives boost the instant you ask for it and is the easier install. A turbo makes more power for the money once it is spooled, and asks more of you to get there — plumbing, heat management, and a more careful hand with fuelling.

For a truck that mostly crawls and tows, the supercharger's low-rpm response is usually the better fit. For a truck that gets driven hard on the road, the turbo is the bigger hammer.
