The third-generation Toyota Pickup (1978–1983) is the transition truck between the early vintage Hilux era and the modern 22R / 22RE workhorse era. Early 3rd-gen trucks ran the 20R 2.2-liter; the 22R 2.4-liter was introduced for the 1981 model year and became the standard engine for the rest of the generation. The 22RE fuel-injected variant did not arrive until the 4th generation in 1983, so 3rd-gen trucks are predominantly carbureted.
