Timing Cover Hardware Kit

Complete your front-end assembly with a clean, corrosion-resistant hardware set designed specifically for dual-row timing chain setups. This premium kit includes all the necessary fasteners for installing an early-style factory dual-row timing cover or completing an LC Engineering dual-row conversion. Each fastener is treated with either a high-durability zinc plating or a sleek black oxide coating to provide superior resistance against oil, heat, and environmental corrosion under the hood.

This is the exact high-quality hardware pack included in our complete Timing Chain Conversion Kit (Part number: 1015012), making it the perfect standalone solution for replacement needs or custom engine builds.

Technical Installation Instructions

1. General Reference

  • Standard Procedures: Follow a factory Toyota, Haynes, or Chilton service manual for the standard timing chain teardown and assembly process. This conversion kit installs using the exact same steps and positioning as a standard OEM single-chain setup.
  • Component Applications: This conversion kit (Part number: 1015012) is engineered for 1985-1995 Toyota 22R/22RE engines. Please note that it utilizes a water pump, oil pump, and oil pump drive spline specifically from an early-style 1981-1984 22R engine.

2. Valve Cover Baffle Modification

To clear the wider double-cam gear, the internal oil baffle of your factory valve cover must be clearanced:

  • Target Area: Do not remove the entire oil baffle. You only need to remove the front baffle extension located directly above the camshaft gear.
  • Removal Process: Using a 3/8" drill bit, carefully locate the factory spot welds and drill just deep enough to release the extension panel.
  • Finishing: Remove the extension piece, deburr all drilled edges, and thoroughly wash/clean the valve cover to ensure absolutely no metal shavings remain before final assembly.

3. Guide Rail Orientation & Chain Tension

  • Guide placement: When installing the heavy-duty metal guide rails, ensure the curved rail is positioned on the outward side. This orientation is critical for achieving the correct chain tension.
  • Machining Adjustments: The curved guide can be manually adjusted during installation to compensate for any changes in geometry caused by prior head or block decking.

4. Camshaft Gear Installation

Because a brand-new double-row chain will be tight, sliding the cam gear onto the camshaft snout may require careful alignment.

  • Technique: If necessary, insert a screwdriver or alignment tool through the center hole of the gear and into the nose of the camshaft to gently leverage and lift the gear upward as you slide it backward onto the shaft.
  • Dowel Alignment: Slightly rock the crankshaft back and forth as needed to align the gear with the camshaft dowel pin.

Critical: Do not force the gear onto the shaft. The gear requires only minimal, steady pressure to seat fully when properly aligned.

5. Final Sealing & Packaging Notes

  • RTV Application: Apply a high-quality sealant (such as RTV or Permatex Ultra Grey) to the head of the top timing cover bolt and the threads of the upper oil pump bolt to prevent oil leaks (refer to the circled locations on the included technical illustration).
  • Gasket Location: Replacement timing cover gaskets are located securely beneath the false bottom of the timing chain kit packaging box.

Replacement double chains and complete double-row chain conversion components are always available directly from LC Engineering.
