The fourth-generation Toyota 4Runner (2003–2009) was a clean break from the older 4Runner architecture — new chassis, new suspension (independent rear on some trims), and a new engine lineup. Three engines were offered: the 2TR-FE 2.7-liter four-cylinder as the base engine through 2004, the 1GR-FE 4.0-liter V6 as the volume engine across the run, and the 2UZ-FE 4.7-liter V8 (the same engine that powered the early Land Cruiser 100-series and 1st gen Tundra) as the premium option.
