Start With the Engine, Not the Badge

Superchargers bolt to engines, not to model years. A 1996 Tacoma and a 1999 4Runner take the same kit if they both have the 3RZ-FE, and two Tacomas from the same year take different kits if one is a 2.7 four-cylinder and the other a 3.4 V6.

So the first question is always: which engine is in it? If you are not sure, the Toyota engine platforms page lists every engine we build for, with the trucks each one came in.

22R and 22RE — The Original

Our 22R-family kits are the ones we have been building longest, and they come in two boost levels and two inlet styles.

Pick the inlet to match the carburetor you already have. Boost level is the more consequential choice: 5 psi is comfortable on a healthy stock engine, 10 psi is not. If the truck has real miles on it, sort the engine out first — the Pro forced-induction cylinder head and a fresh bottom end are cheaper than a blown one.

Keep a spare drive belt on the shelf — it is the part that strands people. The 22R/22RE kits take either the 6-rib belt or the 4-rib belt depending on the pulley setup. Count the ribs on the one that is on the truck before you order.

2RZ and 3RZ — Check the Year Before Anything Else

This is the one that catches people out, and it has nothing to do with 2.4 versus 2.7. 1995–1999 heads have eight intake ports; 2000–2004 heads have four. Supercharger kits do not cross that line. Confirm the year first.

Supporting parts: the 2RZ/3RZ bracket kit, the lower supercharger manifold, the bypass valve and the 2RZ/3RZ/5VZ drive belt.

Boost Level Is Set by the Pulley

On the 2RZ and 3RZ kits, the pulley is what decides how much boost you make — and, on smog-legal kits, whether they stay legal.

Fitting a smaller pulley to a smog-legal kit voids the exemption. If the truck has to pass an inspection, leave the pulley alone.

2TR-FE 2.7L

For the 2005–2015 Tacoma four-cylinder, the 2TR 2.7L Tacoma supercharger kit. This is the only forced-induction option we offer for that engine, and it is a popular one — the 2TR is willing but undergeared for a heavy truck, and boost fixes the character of it more than the numbers suggest.

5VZ-FE 3.4L V6

The Magnuson 3.4L system for the 1995-2004 5VZ-FE covers the 3rd gen 4Runner, 1st gen Tacoma, T100 and Tundra. It is the answer to the single most-asked question we get about that engine, which is how to make it feel like it has the displacement people expected.

1GR-FE 4.0L V6 and the Later V8s

Install kits are separate on some of these: Tacoma 4.0L 2005-2015 and FJ Cruiser 4.0L 2007-2009. The 4.0L 1GR 5-rib belt is the service item.

Service It or It Will Not Last

Roots-type blowers have an oil-filled snout bearing that is not lifetime-filled, whatever anyone tells you. It is a fifteen-minute job and it is the difference between a supercharger that lasts and one that does not.
