Toyota Pickup 4th Gen (1984 - 1988) Overland Parts
Your 1984 to 1988 Toyota Pickup was built for exactly this. These trucks are light, simple, and repairable in a way modern rigs are not, which is why they keep showing up at trailheads forty years on. What they were not built for is the weight of a modern overland load. LCE Performance has been building and outfitting these platforms since the 1980s, and the parts here are chosen around one question: what actually sags or breaks once you start carrying gear, and what fixes it.

Every overland build starts as a weight problem. A roof tent, a drawer system, water, fuel, and recovery gear can add several hundred pounds before you have packed a single tool, and a forty year old leaf pack was never sprung for it. Sagging rear springs are the most common thing we see on loaded 4th gen Pickups, and they take ride quality, steering geometry, and brake balance down with them. Our suspension parts collection covers the whole range.
Steering and Front End - Check This Before You Leave
This is the section most build guides skip, and it is the one that strands people. Ball joints on a 4th gen Pickup wear out quietly, and added front weight from a bumper and winch accelerates it. A failed lower ball joint on a loaded truck a long way from pavement is not a roadside repair.
Body damage a long way from town costs you time more than money. Steel protection also gives you somewhere to mount recovery points, lights, and a winch, which is why it usually comes before the accessories it carries. Our bumpers and sliders options shield the critical areas of your Pickup.
Order matters here. Fit the front bumper before the winch, and sort the torsion bars after the bumper goes on, not before.
Fuel Range, Recovery and Light
Range is the constraint that ends most trips early. The LCE Auxiliary Fuel Tank adds real distance between fill-ups without strapping jerry cans to the outside of the truck, where they cook in the sun and catch on brush.
For recovery, a Heavy-Duty Winch Mount for the 1984-1989 Pickup gives you a correct mounting point, and the Warn Zeon 10-S pairs with it at 10,000 lb. Most 4th gen builds are well served by a winch in that range; more capacity mostly adds nose weight you then have to spring for. Browse the full winches selection to match one to your bumper and electrical system.
For lighting, the LCE Front Light Bar for the 1984-1988 Pickup is a direct-fit mount made for this truck, which matters more than raw output on a vehicle this age - the charging system was designed for sealed beams, and a bar you can actually bolt on beats one you have to fabricate for. The wider offroad lighting collection has bars and pods if you are running a modern charging setup.
Build It in the Right Order
The most common mistake we see is buying accessories first and suspension last, then wondering why a well-equipped truck rides badly and wanders on the highway. Working from the ground up costs less overall:
Springs and torsion bars sized for the weight you actually carry
Steering and front-end wear items replaced before the trip
Bumpers and sliders, which set the mounting points for everything after
Winch, fuel range and lighting last
Not sure where your truck sits on that list? We work on these platforms every day and we would rather talk it through than sell you the wrong part twice - contact us and tell us how you use the rig.
